THE HOWLS

The Howls Nature Reserve is an area of woodland owned by Hartlepool Water Company and managed since 1991 by Tees valley Wildlife Trust.

This deep, wooded valley of the Char Beck was once destined to be flooded to become a reservoir, but plans were changed and the ancient woodland and its wildlife were saved.

The Howls and The Batts both form a vital link in the wildlife corridor which leads down to Greatham Beck and on to the River Tees.
